The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is a collective of passionate individuals, moving together to create a world free of MS. The success of Bike MS depends on volunteers like you! Each volunteer’s contribution, large or small, is critical to the success of the event. Volunteers provide key support to Bike MS all year, from serving on planning committees, calling past participants to providing safety for our riders and overall support at the event. Volunteers are the helping hands that make the event possible! When you join the Bike MS Volunteer Team, you become a part of Bike MS. Together we will provide support, raise money, have fun, and make a difference in the lives of people living with MS.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in participating as a volunteer. There are many volunteer opportunities at Bike MS; families, corporate groups and individuals are encouraged and welcome to participate. Some volunteer positions require a criminal and/or DMV background check. Below are some examples of Bike MS volunteer opportunities.

Communications/Ham Radio Operators

Ham radio operators are stationed in all support vehicles and at all rest stops. There is a central net control at the college. These volunteers provide our primary means of communications along the route, passing along all vital information and traffic updates.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

Certified emergency medical technicians patrol the route in marked vehicles. They administer first aid, provide emergency medical aid, and summon further medical assistance if necessary. They can be contacted via any Ham Radio Operator.

Finish Line

Volunteers cheer on cyclists, hand out bike MS ride medals to cyclists as they cross the finish line.

Volunteers prepare food for lunches. They serve lunch at a designated stop along the route.

Massage Therapy

Certified massage therapists offer massages to cyclists.

Do you own a camera and enjoy capturing memories that'll last a lifetime? We need you to lend your creative skills capturing all of our wonderful memories to be made at bike MS. From start to finish, we'll need volunteers to take high-quality, digital pictures of all aspects of bike MS weekend. Must own a camera and be willing to use it during the event.

Planning Committee

Volunteers will help plan and organize different aspects of the event prior to the actual date of the event. Volunteers will serve as apart of a committee of volunteers that will come together, for monthly meetings with the bike MS event coordinator, at the Harrisburg office.

Promotional Team

Volunteers help to promote the ride through a variety of media venues, including television, radio and newspapers. They distribute brochures throughout the chapter's 30-county territory and into surrounding area. Year-round

Volunteers check in all cyclists and provide general ride information. Volunteers may choose to volunteer at registration on Friday evening, Saturday morning, Sunday morning or at all available times during bike MS weekend.

Rest Stop Support

Volunteers provide water, energy drinks, fruit and nutritional snacks at rest stops along the routes. There are restrooms available at all rest stops.

Route Design

Volunteers help plan the various routes options and potential rest stop ideas for the event.

Route Marking

Assist with marking the road with a water-based spray paint, post directional arrow signs and post motivational signs along each route. We typically suggest teams of two people per car to mark a section of the route and it may require performing these tasks in extreme weather conditions (heat, rain, etc). Route marking is done the week prior to the day of the event.

Safety Marshall

A team of volunteers will cycle the routes to identify potential road hazards, remind riders to obey traffic laws, provide minor bicycle repairs and give moral support to all riders.

SAG Drivers

Drive Support and Gear (SAG) vans. Volunteers drive support vehicles along all routes. They assist weary cyclists or those with mechanical problems by driving them (and bicycles) to the next rest stop, where cyclists can rest, receive first aid attention, or get their bikes reparied. Moderate lifting may be required.

Set-Up Support

Volunteers will be needed throughout bike MS weekend to help set up various stations during the event. Must be able to move with ease and possibly lift heavy boxes.

Clean-Up / Tear Down Support

Volunteers will be needed throughout bike MS weekend to help clean up areas after each day ends. Must be able to move with ease, ability to lift heavy items, and not afraid to get a little dirty!

Traffic Control

Volunteers will be stationed along the roadside of key intersections to alert cyclists of oncoming traffic or other potential hazards. They cannot direct or stop vehicles and should not stand in the road.

As Needed

Assist the event coordinator, during bike MS weekend, with anything where there is a current need for volunteers.

Volunteers can raise funds too! Bike MS volunteers have access to a variety of great fundraising tools. When you register online, you may access your Participant Center where you can set a fundraising goal, update your personal page to share your story with others, e-mail supporters, track your progress and qualify for great fundraising prizes!
